When we want to buy something, we go to a shop. There are different kinds of shops for example: food supermarkets, grocery, department stores, men"s and women"s clothing stores, bakeries and butcheries.

I like to do my shopping at supermarkets and department stores, because lots of different goods are sold under one roof, it`s very convenient. Department stores are composed of many departments: clothes, fabrics, shoes, toys, china and glass, sports goods, electric appliances, curtains, linen, cosmetics, etc. You can buy all the necessary things here.

There are escalators in big stores; they take customers to different floors and counters on which the goods for sale can be easily seen.

In the men"s clothing department, one can find trousers, overcoats, suits, ties, etc.

In the women"s clothing department, one can choose dresses, skirts, blouses, coats, beautiful underwear and other things.

In the knitwear department, there are sweaters, woollen jackets, cardigans, pullovers. In the perfumery, you can buy face powder, different creams, lipstick, mascara, shampoos and lotions.

In a food supermarket we buy various things like: sausages, macaroni, fish, sugar, flour, tea and cereals. At the butcher"s we can find meat and poultry. At the bakery they sell white and brown bread, rolls and biscuits.

At the greengrocery there is wide choice of vegetables and greens: potatoes, cabbage, onions, cucumbers, beetroots, carrots, green peas, dill and parsley.

If you go to a dairy, you will find milk, cheese, butter, cream and other products.

There are various methods of shopping. It may be a self-service shop where you go from counter to counter selecting goods you need and putting them into your basket.

Then you have to take your basket to the checkout counter, where the prices of your purchases are added up.

If it is not a self-service shop, the shop assistants help their customers to find what they want.

The customers pay money to the cashier and get their change back.

В продуктовом супермаркете мы можем купить различные продукты: сосиски, макароны, рыбу, сахар, муку, чай и крупы. В мясном мы можем найти мясо и птицу. В булочной продаются белый и черный хлеб, булочки и печенье.

В овощном магазине большой выбор овощей и зелени: картошка, капуста, лук, огурцы, свекла, морковь, зеленый горошек, укроп и петрушка.

Если вы зайдете в молочный магазин, вы сможете купить там молоко, сыр, масло, сливки и другие продукты.

Существуют различные способы ходить по магазинам. Есть магазины самообслуживания, где вы ходите от прилавка к прилавку, выбираете товары и кладете их в корзину.

Затем вам нужно отнести корзину контрольному прилавку, где стоимость ваших покупок суммируется.

Do you like shopping? It is well known that many people do like, especially women. In any case we often just have to do it, when we need some foodstuffs, for example.

There is a great variety of shops in the world: dairy, baker"s, grocer"s, fishmonger"s, greengrocer"s, butcher"s, sweet shop, florist"s, stationer"s, footwear, children"s wear, jewellery and so on.

Different people do shopping in different ways. Do you prefer shopping in small corner shops which are usually located in your neighbourhood or in big supermarkets? Undoubtedly, there are certain advantages and disadvantages in both variants. Your choice usually depends on what you need to buy. If you lack something like bread or milk, it is worth going to the nearest corner shop, for that will take you about 10 minutes. However, if your fridge is empty and there is not a slice of bread in your breadbasket, you"d better go to a supermarket. There you"ll find all sorts of foodstuffs - meat and poultry, cheese and sausage, frozen food, drinks, sweets, fruit and vegetables, grocery, bakery and dairy products. In such shops people usually take a shopping basket or a trolley and walk among the rows where all items are displayed on the shelves or kept in refrigerators. If it is not a self-service shop, and most small shops are not, the shop-assistant helps the customer to find what he or she needs. In supermarkets you can buy not only foodstuffs but also stationary, clothes, household goods, some electrical goods, perfumery, newspapers and magazines. They sell various goods under one roof and, undoubtedly, this is very convenient. You can walk from one department to another looking about, finding out the price and if there is any discount and in the end you come to cashier"s desk where you pay for all your purchases in cash or by a credit card.

Big department stores are very widespread in Great Britain. The most famous department stores in the UK are Harrods (one of the largest and the most expensive), House of Fraser, Marks and Spencer and Debenhams.

Marks & Spencer attracts a great variety of customers from housewives to millionaires. Such celebrities as Princess Diana, Dustin Hoffman and the British Prime-minister David Cameron are just a few of its famous customers. It makes a profit of more than 10 million pounds a week. The store has a brilliant reputation due to a high quality of its goods. It sells not only food and clothes, but also flowers and furniture. Marks & Spencer is a chain store which has over 700 branches all over the world.
Besides huge department stores, there are many cheap street markets in Great Britain. Most of them sell various goods: food, jewellery, clothes, electronics and household goods. Some of them are specialized in particular items: pet products, books, antique furniture and garden stuff.

British people are fond of out-of-town shopping. Some of them have a special shopping day once a week when the whole family takes a car and goes to an enormous shopping complex out-of-town, which is also called "superstore". The prices in such shops are pretty low and the choice of items is various. In these complexes you can find one or more supermarkets, chain-stores, some smaller shops, a lot of cafes, end even a multi-screen cinema. One of such stores is IKEA. You are sure to know we have similar shops in Russia, which are called "Mega".

Talking about shopping preferences of Russian people, it is worth saying that many of them like to go abroad in order to buy cheap good quality things. Those who live in St. Petersburg have an opportunity to do their shopping in Finland, as the country is situated nearby. It takes only about 4 hours to get to such towns as Helsinki, Imatra, Hamina or Lappeenranta. Each of them has huge shopping centers where you can find such well-known shops as H&M, Aleksi, Vero Moda, Lindex, Luhta, Kappahl, Zara, Mango, Vendi, Vogue, Stockmann and so on. Moreover, twice a season there is a time of crazy discounts of 50 to 70 per cent.

Shopping is an integral part of our life. Nowadays it has become not only a necessity but also a pleasure for many people.

Люди делают покупки по-разному. Что вам нравится больше: ходить в маленькие ларьки, которые обычно расположены неподалёку от вашего дома, или в супермаркеты? Несомненно, в обоих вариантах можно найти и достоинства и недостатки. Ваш выбор обычно зависит от того, что именно вы собираетесь купить. Если у вас закончился сыр или хлеб, вы зайдёте в ближайший магазин, так как это не займёт у вас больше 10 минут. Если же у вас пустой холодильник и в доме нет даже куска хлеба, вы наверняка пойдёте в супермаркет. В таких магазинах люди обычно берут корзинку или тележку и ходят между рядами, где товары выставлены на полках или в холодильниках. В супермаркетах вы сможете купить не только продукты питания, но и многое другое: канцелярские товары, одежду, различные товары для дома, электротехнику, парфюмерию, газеты и журналы. Всё это продаётся под одной крышей, что, несомненно, очень удобно. Вы можете ходить из отдела в отдел, выбирая подходящие по цене товары, а также товары со скидкой, а затем идёте к кассе, где оплачиваете покупки наличными или банковской картой.

Going shopping is a part of our everyday life. For some people it’s a pleasant pastime while for others it’s an everyday routine. Some people love doing the shopping and they are happy if they can pick up a bargain in the sales. But whether you like shopping or not you have to do it because it’s a necessity.

In big cities and even many small towns there are all kinds of shops and stores as well as supermarkets. Supermarkets are primarily food stores which sell all kinds of food: fresh, frozen and canned meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, dairy products and bread. Practically everything a family needs can be found in a supermarket. There the customer serves himself and pays at the cash-desk on leaving the shop.

Department stores carry clothing for men, women and children, china and glassware, household electric appliances, furniture and other goods. However, many people don’t like to shop in big department stores as they are often overcrowded.

In my city we also have got a great number of shops. Most of them open at 9 a.m. and close at 8 or 9 at night. Smaller shops normally have a lunch break. Nearly all shops are closed on Sundays. I should say that all the shops are equally popular with customers, though some of them are really expensive. But they are not always quality shops. That’s why many people these days prefer to do the shopping at the market where the prices are more reasonable.

In our family it’s my father who does most of the shopping. He usually shops in the supermarket, where he goes to the grocery department, the greengrocery, the meat and fish counters and buys all the stuff we need for our large family. He usually does it once a week.

For me and my mother on the other hand going shopping is a kind of pastime and even entertainment. We can spend hours and hours dropping in at one shop after another in search of something special or unusual. More than often we buy things that we practically don’t need.

I love shopping for clothes. The last shopping round I made with my friend a few days ago. We set out midmorning and managed to go round all the shops in the city which where worth visiting. First we went to the central department store but the goods there were the same as everywhere else and more expensive. Besides we didn’t see any fashion clothes for the young. The only good thing about such stores is that they normally have a good selection of cosmetics and perfumery. So we didn’t miss a chance to pick up some mascara and hair spray. After that we had a quick look at the footwear, haberdashery and ready-made clothes and were ready for a snack at McDonalds. Then we dropped in at some small shops which offer fashionable clothes and a half-price sale is a usual thing there. After going through the latest cuts of shirts and skirts I found a lovely little dress for myself but they didn’t have my size. So I told myself that next time I wouldn’t wait for amazing items to go on sale - it’s not worth the disappointment when they disappear before you can make your purchase. Then we moved on to another shop that had «А Huge Sale» sign on the door. After making our way through the crowd each of us grabbed piles of clothes and waited in the line for the fitting rooms. We tried on the selected items but didn’t buy anything as even the sale prices were too high for us.

Indeed, shopping is a pleasant pastime when you can afford to buy the things you like.

I should say that I am one of those boys who hate shopping and the idea of doing the shopping drives me mad, though, of course, I like delicious food and nice clothes. It means somebody has to do it for you. In our family it’s my mother’s responsibility. She knows what to buy and where to buy at a cheaper price. I live in a small town, so there are not many shops here, to say nothing of supermarkets. Most shops are situated in the centre of the town and there is a two-storeyed department store in the central square and it is always overcrowded. The market is opposite the department store and people, mostly women and girls, go there to shop but in my opinion they more often go to look at the things than to buy. I don’t understand this kind of pastime.

I seldom go shopping, but I know where this or that thing can be bought. For example, if I want to save time, I go to the nearest food store where I can buy everything I need: bread, milk, sugar, eggs, butter and so on. I prefer this shop because the goods are ready-weighed and ready-packed. I find it convenient and always go there if my mother forgets to buy something and I am sent for it.

I also know that department stores have a lot of departments: stationary, millinery, footwear, sportswear goods, perfumery, jewellery, ready-made women’s and men’s clothes. All the things for sale are on the counters and in the shop windows so the customers can choose what they want.

As I have said I am not keen on shopping at all and when my parents ask me to buy something, I am always reluctant to do it. From time to time my mother takes me to a department store when we need to buy some clothes or shoes for me. I hate trying things on in a fitting-room. Most of all I like book and music shops. I can stay there for hours leafing through pages of some historical books or going through piles of CDs or records. These shops are worth visiting even if you don’t intend to make a purchase there as they offer a wide selection of books on music. But regular shopping is really boring and tiresome.

My name is Lena. I live in Krasnodar. It’s the central city of our region and one of the biggest cities in Russia. There are lots of big and small shops in my city. When we need to buy something we go shopping. My parents go shopping for food to the nearest supermarket nearly every day. We also have a special shopping day when we go to different shops together. It’s Saturday because all members of my family have a day-off. We go to several stores on this day. It can be a grocery, a bakery, a clothes store, a cosmetics store, a pharmacy, a store of electronic appliances and some others. My favourite shop is a clothes store. I really like shopping for new clothes and shoes. My mum always helps me to choose the right size and the right design. However, I prefer shopping with my best friends. Not far from the place where I live there is a huge mall with numerous shops, restaurants, an ice-rink, a cinema and entertainment facilities. We often go there for shopping or just to have a good time. It has become our favourite pastime recently. We don’t always buy something but window-shopping can be also fun. My parents say that in the past there were no big stores like this and sometimes it was difficult to find what you wanted.
