A little about mortise locks

The lever lock mechanism, which ensures secrecy, is not recommended for a garage, especially in the northern regions. Often the plates of this “Tetris” jam, and it becomes very problematic.

A simple and reliable security mechanism that is suitable for any lock in the garage - a rack and pinion pair. We cut a saw on the edge of the bolt and on the key itself (you need corner grooves and protrusions). When the drill-like key is inserted and pressed, the gate opens easily. Such a simple and reliable mechanism can be installed even on a large massive lock.

This design can withstand any frost. The only negative is that the key is too big. But you can’t limit yourself to just a gate lock; you need reliable side and central locks for swing garage doors.

Simple "spinner" lock

You can make turntable locks for garage doors with your own hands quickly and easily. To do this you will need 50 mm wooden blocks and a metal strip.

Convenient and reliable pinwheel-type locks are perfect for swing gates, but they are not commercially available - it is not profitable for manufacturers to make them.

The principle of operation of such a lock is the simplest - a crossbar is secured in the center with a through bolt, which moves along wedge-shaped bars. When the gate is closed, the doors fit tightly against each other, resting against the door block.

This type of mechanism securely closes swing gates, even without additional bolts. It is impossible to open it from the outside, but it can be opened from the inside “with a slight movement of the hand.”

How to make a spinner latch for a garage door:

  • We attach a metal latch on top, which will spin on a self-tapping screw (diameter 8-10), hexagonal head. The upper latch is needed to increase rigidity and prevent deformation and twisting of the sashes, in addition, it is an additional stop;
  • The size of the turntable bar itself is 4.5 x 10 x 200 cm. It can be a steel strip or a wooden block, the thickness is at least 5 mm. We choose the length depending on the width of the gates; usually the length should be two-thirds of the width of the gate;
  • We fix the turntable in the center from the inside to the left leaf of the garage door with a through bolt (diameter 10 -12 mm). The distance from the edge of the sash is 6 – 10 cm;
  • so that the bolt turns easily, we put two washers on it;
  • on the gate leaf, on two leaves we make a groove with a clamp from a channel in which the bar will be attached when turning. It is better to grind the channel with a wedge so that the strip easily fits into the groove;
  • We attach a stop rail to the right sash from the outside, which should protrude beyond the sash by 10 - 20 mm.

The bolts on the outside need to be ground off so that they cannot be unscrewed. Such garage door locks hold the doors tightly in any strong wind and are impossible to open from the outside.

Espagnols - simple and reliable

The disadvantage of such constipation is that it does not ensure a tight fit of the valves. But this type of valve is reliable and durable, practically unbreakable.

An espagnolette is a metal rod with a stop that rides on a rail. The espagnolette is inexpensive, and a simple mechanism can be welded from an ordinary iron rod.

How to make a simple latch:

  • you need two metal rods (diameter greater than 10 mm);
  • We attach a handle to the rod. For a horizontal latch, we weld the handle in the center of the rod, for a vertical lock - at the top;
  • for the groove you need a metal tube with a diameter slightly larger than the rod so that it is firmly fixed in the tube;
  • We weld the tube to one leaf or to the lower frame of the gate for a vertical latch;
  • On the other flap we attach the same tube, shorter in length. We carefully measure so that the tubes on the doors are at the same level and the rod moves easily and fits into the groove;
  • Additionally, to secure the closed lock, we weld an eye into which the handle of the rod must be inserted.

Vertical bolts, welded on two gate leaves, securely fix the gate closer to the center. You can dig the pipe groove directly into the ground, it will be more reliable and easier.

Advice. For vertical locking, you can use powerful hooks. You just need to weld the eyelet to the bottom frame of the gate and attach the hook to each leaf. The hooks also need to be placed closer to the connection of the sashes, this way the fixation is more reliable and there is no backlash.

Barrier for garage doors

The barrier does not ensure a tight fit of the gates, but it is impossible to open the gate from the outside. The strip is made from a wooden block or channel.

  • We drill a hole for a rotary bolt (M10 or M12) at a distance of 8 cm from the end of the bar. Bolt length - take into account the thickness of the sash, the thickness of the locking strip itself and two washers, leaving a thread for tightening the nut;
  • drill a hole for the bolt in the gate leaf, attaching a strip of lock;
  • it is important that the bolt on which the barrier rotates has a wide, strong head, since it bears the entire load and emphasis;
  • We weld three gripper grooves onto two sashes. One groove on the sash, where the barrier strip was secured, is closer to the end, the second - opposite, on the other sash, also closer to the end of the sash, the third - at the farthest end of the second sash, so that the end of the barrier strip fits into it.

Sliding locks

It’s easier to buy it in a store and just weld it to the swing garage door leaves. But, if this is not possible, then you can make such a valve yourself:

  • you need a metal strip - length 40 cm and width - 5 cm;
  • this strip should move along the guide grooves;
  • guides on both sides of the leaves can be welded to the leaf on a metal plate on the gate leaf;
  • We attach the bolt itself to the other sash with metal screws or welding;
  • We attach brackets to the strip, from the edge and to the edge of the guide so that they can be additionally secured with a padlock.

Be sure to check the correct alignment of the grooves and strips several times so that they do not jam when closing. Then you can lubricate the locks with machine oil.

Universal reliable lock for the garage

The top lock on the garage door is difficult to open. But the craftsmen copied an interesting design from Finnish sites. It's easy to do:

  • We make metal hooks according to the drawing so that they are smooth, and we clean them with a grinder. Hook thickness – 12 mm;
  • The metal stand at the height of the gate is made of stainless steel. A handle can be welded to the rack in the middle for ease of turning.

  • We weld the hooks onto the rack on both sides;
  • We make clamps at the top and bottom for attaching the hook;
  • In the middle of the sash we weld another holder for rotation.

We make such a design for one sash (pressing the second one), and in the center we install a regular lock - a bolt. Opening and closing is convenient - no need to bend over or reach. The design was borrowed from a truck trailer and from Finnish comrades. The main thing is that the doors are pressed tightly and open easily and simply.

  1. Vertical type deadbolts. A fairly convenient design that allows you to securely fasten gate leaves or gates. Its most common use is as a latch for swinging garage doors. To fix the gate leaves, metal rods with handles are used, which fit into grooves in the floor and ceiling; they securely fix the gate in the closed position. The fixation of the locks themselves is ensured by fastenings on the gates, made in the form of shelves, into which the lock handles are inserted by turning them.

  2. A simple vertical deadbolt. Mainly used for and is a smaller copy of a vertical lock. Mounted at the top or bottom of the gate.
  3. Horizontal bolts. The horizontal latch is used on almost any gate and wicket. The principle of operation is practically no different from the vertical type of bolts and, having a fairly simple design, is perhaps the most common type of bolts.
  4. Deadbolts secured with springs. This type of locks mainly serves to secure the gate or wicket in the opening and is installed on the inside of the gate. The spring design allows the mechanism to be activated without much effort. For greater reliability, it is proposed to install duplicate bolts.

  5. . Possessing relatively high reliability, this type of constipation is quite easy to buy in almost any hardware store and quite difficult to do with your own hands. To install it, you need to drill a hole in the base of the gate. The disadvantage is that you must carry the key to this lock with you.
  6. Sliding overhead bolts. This device is distinguished by its simplicity and can be installed on almost any type of material. This lock can be installed on any side of the gate; the only prerequisite is a flat surface of the material. The reinforced flat rod provides this type of deadbolt with high reliability and strong closure of the gate. Often such locks are duplicated with padlocks, which do not allow the bolt to be opened when the padlock is closed.
  7. Screw shutters are mounted on the front of the gate and are also easy to use. The basis of the mechanism is a pin with a cut thread and a turnkey base, on which there is a small tubercle and a slot. Using a key with an identical base cutout and pin, the shutter device is activated. This type of lock is quite simple and is not difficult to make with your own hands, but the mechanism itself requires quite a lot of free space in the gate for its installation. Moreover, finding the key to such a lock will not be difficult, so you should not rely too much on it.
  8. Rack deadbolt. This type of lock is quite difficult to make at home without a turning tool and relevant experience. The mechanism consists of keys with special grooves cut into them and the base of the bolt corresponding to these grooves. Such a device has a fairly long service life and is distinguished by its reliability, however, even for this type of lock, the keys are quite easy to counterfeit. It is recommended to complement these deadbolts with other types of locks.
  9. Groove lock with rotary mechanism. With a fairly simple design, this mechanism has a high quality and level of protection against opening the lock. However, despite the low complexity of the device, its independent production requires quite a lot of experience and the appropriate tools. The principle of operation of the mechanism is based on the fact that when the key enters the keyhole, using circular movements, it engages the gears of the mechanism, which in turn opens or closes the gate.

Modern types of constipation

Progress does not stand still, and now it is not uncommon to see electric drives or electric locks on gates. Both solenoid-type drives and a device consisting of electric motors and cables are used. The latter type is often assembled independently, unless, of course, it concerns those that work precisely on this principle.

To close the gate, two types of locks are mainly used - electromechanical and electromagnetic.

Quite often found in special stores and organizations dealing with access control systems. The principle of their operation is that when voltage is applied to it, an electromagnet is triggered, which attracts a wicket or gate leaf to itself. Moreover, the attraction occurs with quite a lot of force, and without special equipment it is almost impossible to open such gates.

Mounted electromagnetic gate lock

They are practically no different from ordinary locks, except that the bolt in it is driven by electricity, and such a lock can be opened not only with a mechanical key.
Both types of locks are activated using a magnetic key, radio key fob, magnetic card, RF tag, hidden button, code panel and similar systems.

For some particularly avid security enthusiasts, companies may now offer a fingerprint detector that will open the gate when a fingerprint is read. For gates, these systems are usually additionally equipped with audio or video intercoms, which allow you to talk to a visitor from home and open the gate for him. Recently, these devices operate on an electric current of no more than 12 volts, which makes them safe for use and eliminates electric shock.

Electromagnetic lock option for welded gates

The most economical options exist. They open when you press certain groups of numbers at the same time.

The bolt lock is quite strong and durable. There is a thread cut on it, through which a key with such notches passes. The bolt bar is held in place by a spring.

The sliding lock consists of two bars with rings. When moving one over the other and aligning the rings, a lock is inserted from the inside to secure it.

Automated systems

Automated garage locking systems would also be a good solution. Such mechanisms fall into two categories:

  1. Electromagnetic.
    The principle of protection is based on the operation of an electromagnet: under the influence of voltage, it fixes the sash immovable. A key card or code is used as unlocking.
  2. Electromechanical.
    The mechanical basis is the crossbar system that sets the door in motion. You can unlock this lock using a key, code or application.

The easiest way to create locks will be the “spinner,” which has been proven over the years. Finding it on sale is extremely problematic. In short, it is a strip fixed with a through bolt; when locked, it rotates around a horizontal axis and fits into the grooves.

The “spinner” closes only from the inside and ensures a tight fit of the swing gate leaves.

The materials you will need are a metal strip or beam (optimal thickness - 50 mm, length - two-thirds of the width of the gate).

Stages of work:

  1. We fix the beam in the center of the gate, to the edge of one of the leaves, secure it with a through bolt (10- or 12-mm) and place washers on it.
  2. We install several hinges for locking at the top and bottom, which will allow the doors to be opened with a rotational movement.

It would not be superfluous to treat the materials for the lock with an anti-corrosion compound to preserve the mechanism in bad weather and precipitation.

Horizontal crossbar

In other words - a latch. This type is often used for entrance gates. Unfortunately, it will not create a tight fit of the sashes, however, it still remains a reliable and durable system.

Creating a locking device:

  1. We bend a piece of reinforcement (diameter – 20 mm) into the shape of the letter “L” or weld a handle.
  2. We install pieces of pipe, rings or hinges on the sashes.
  3. We attach a tube (diameter a little more than 20 mm) to the opposite flap to tightly fix the segment.

The lock design often includes a spring stop.

Threaded locking mechanism

To make locks for this type of garage door, you will need a metal strip. The length of the material must exceed the length of the sashes. On one side, we install the bar on a separate eyelet on the wall.

At the end of the other side you need to create a hole in the rail for the bolt. We make a thread in the wall or gate hole. A metal casing is attached on top of it to further protect the mechanism.

Security vertical bolt

We install the structure on the frame; a lever is attached closer to the edge of the sash. The main material is a profile pipe or a metal corner. To make the bolt, you need to weld several pieces of pipe to the frame and make holes in it to secure the sash.

A lock is also needed to secure the lock itself. This will be facilitated by a protrusion for the locking lever.

When creating a hole, take into account all the parameters of the gate - length, height and weight.

Electromechanical lock

To independently create a combined electromechanical design, use the lever mechanism we have already mentioned. The plates with figured cutouts are removed from the lock, replaced with a guide and attached to the crossbars. For them, a hole is made in the end of the second gate leaf (less fixed).

The corners are welded at the fastening site, and then a lock is installed. The power source is a battery or power supply. This type of locks is quite expensive. Do not forget also that without electricity in the garage it will not function.

Spring type

To make a bolting mechanism, take a latch, a metal base, and staples. The plate, which will be the base, is screwed to the doors. It is desirable that its length corresponds to the width of the canvas. Staples are welded to the blade plate and a bolt is passed through them. For convenience, a limiter or handle is welded to the bolt.

Latch

Take metal hooks shaped like the letter G. There can be four or six of them. They should all be the same size. One hook is screwed into place where the door leaves touch. A couple more - at the ends of the canvases opposite each other. A bolt in the form of a metal pipe is threaded through the hooks. A handle is welded onto it to make it easier to use.

Pinwheel

Locking mechanisms of this type are mounted on gates made of metal and on wickets. To make them, you need:

  1. Take a block five centimeters thick and two steel strips bent in the middle - stoppers.
  2. The crossbar is screwed from the very edge of one of the sashes. Metal is attached to each part of the door panels so that they secure the deadbolt as it rotates.

The canvases are fixed very tightly. This homemade product reliably protects against the entry of unauthorized persons.

For another version of the turntable, a block and one metal plate are used. The block is screwed onto the edge of one of the panels, the plate is screwed onto the other panel. The mechanism works like a barrier.

Blocking structures made of corrugated sheets

Fences in summer cottages, gates of outbuildings, and garages are often made from. Blocking devices are attached to prepared sash frames made of profile pipes or frames made of metal. Espagnolette

The peculiarity of this latch is its simplicity and reliability. When installing a lock with your own hands, you may encounter the only problem - the presence of a small gap between the sashes. However, thanks to the design - the latch, which fits into the slide with a stop, it is not possible to open them. You can make such a lock yourself or go to a specialized store for a ready-made design.

Please note that using such a lock, you can create a convenient sliding system by welding a metal eyelet at the bottom of the sash. Thus, elements made of metal will allow you to reliably and with guaranteed safety lock the gate without fear of penetration from the outside.

Lock for swing gates

Do you want to make a convenient lock for swing gates with your own hands? We suggest that you carry out a design that does not involve the use of various quickly failing elements - bolts, rivets or other fasteners. They are ideally made from corrugated sheets. A special feature of this mechanism is the ability to choose two different options:

  • A lock that is attached to profile pipes.
  • Lock based on a corner.

The metal angle does not have the necessary strength to hold a heavy gate. In turn, the profile pipe does not have an aesthetic appearance, but it is a reliable and strong lock for any type of gate.

The appearance of the lock is similar to a sliding invoice, which is attached to the frame by welding. Taking into account the dimensions of the canvas, the number of locks is designed. If there are two doors, then you will need a lock for each half. We mark the place where the lock will be mounted, the length of the rod entering the ground, as well as the mark of its entrance. Next, rods of the same length are cut, after which more short sections of the rod are welded to their upper part so that the constipations are conveniently fixed. Note that the length of the rods should allow them to sink into the ground enough to ensure security and not allow the gate to be opened without effort.
